Vocal Range and Vocal Registers
Your vocal range is every note you can produce from lowest to highest; your registers are the distinct mechanical settings your vocal folds use across that span. Most singers have a chest register at the bottom, a head register at the top, and a mix in between, with a transition zone — the passaggio — where the mechanism has to change gear. Range problems are almost always register problems: the notes exist, but the handover between mechanisms is not yet smooth.

What a vocal range actually is
Your vocal range is the distance between the lowest and highest notes you can produce with a usable tone. It is written as two note names — E3 to A4, for example — using scientific pitch notation, where C4 is middle C on a piano.
Two qualifications matter. First, usable does the heavy lifting: a squeak you can force out once is not part of your range. Second, range is not a fixed property of your body. Most of what singers gain through training is access to notes they physically had all along but could not reach cleanly.
Range is not the same as tessitura
Tessitura is the narrower band inside your range where your voice sounds best and can stay comfortably for a long time. It is the more useful number of the two, and it is the one that actually determines your voice type.
Two singers can share an identical range and be different voice types, because one is comfortable living at the bottom of it and the other at the top. If you take one idea from this page, take this one: comfort classifies a voice, reach does not.
How to measure your range
You need a reference pitch — a piano, a tuner app, or any keyboard app on a phone. Work in a warmed-up voice; measuring cold will understate you at both ends.
- Start on a comfortable note in the middle of your speaking range and match it.
- Step down one semitone at a time, singing each note on an open vowel. Stop at the last note that still has tone rather than air or rattle. Write it down.
- Return to the middle and step up the same way, quietly. Stop at the last note you can produce without the throat gripping.
- Record both numbers. That span, written low-to-high, is your range.
The registers, bottom to top
A register is a stable mechanical setting of the vocal folds — a particular combination of length, thickness and closure that produces a consistent series of tones. Moving up your range means moving through several of them.
- Vocal fry — the lowest, a loose rattle produced with very slack folds. Used as an effect and as a diagnostic, rarely for sustained singing.
- Chest voice — short, thick folds vibrating along their full depth. The heavier, speech-like sound you feel buzzing in the sternum. See head voice vs chest voice.
- Mix — a blend rather than a separate mechanism, and the setting most contemporary singing lives in above the middle of the range.
- Head voice — folds stretched thin, vibrating mostly at their edges, but still closing completely. Lighter, and felt in the face rather than the chest.
- Falsetto — thinner still, and with incomplete closure, which is what gives it that breathy, hollow quality. Covered in high notes and falsetto.
- Whistle — the highest, present in some voices and not others, produced by a very small vibrating portion of the folds.
The passaggio: where the voice changes gear
The passaggio is the transition zone between two registers — the point where the folds have to change configuration to keep going. Most singers have two: a primo passaggio lower down and a secondo passaggio nearer the top.
In male voices the second transition typically sits somewhere around E4 to A4, higher for tenors and lower for basses; in female voices the transitions are commonly found around E4–F♯4 and again around an octave above. Those figures are orientation, not diagnosis — your own passaggio is wherever your voice keeps wanting to break.
A crack is nothing more than that handover happening abruptly. It is not damage, and it is not a sign that your range stops there.
Why range problems are usually register problems
Singers who say they cannot sing high can almost always produce the notes in a lighter setting. What they cannot do is get to those notes from below without the mechanism jamming. That is a coordination problem at the passaggio, not a ceiling.
Which is why the fix is rarely “practice high notes”. It is to slide slowly and quietly across the transition, in both directions, until the handover stops being an event. The practical method is in how to expand your vocal range.
