How To Sing Better

How To Sing

If you find yourself wanting to learn how to sing better you probably don’t like how you sound for any number of reasons:

  • Too much clutter in your voice
  • Your pitch sounds off-key
  • You run out of breath
  • Your sung phrases aren’t smooth or
  • a whole host of other reasons

To sing better you have to focus on these areas when practicing:

  • Breath control
  • Pitch, Tone and Resonance
  • Projection and Clarity
  • Range

Can You Become a Better Singer?

Remember one thing:

No matter how bad you think your voice is, you can get better at singing very easily. It just takes some practice and a willingness to learn how to train your voice.

At the end of the day you’re working towards one thing – more control over your voice and vocal muscles, in every way.

So how do we do that?

How To Take Control of Your Singing Voice

You have to remember that there are two essential parts to becoming a better singer

  • learning a new or better method/technique/exercise
  • practicing the technique/method/exercise daily

The more you know about how the voice works and how to control it, the easier it will be to shape it the way you want – better tone, more resonance, perfect pitch high notes, etc.

Learning new techniques is just as important as practicing them diligently.

One Sure Fire Exercise for a Better Singing Voice

This one particular technique will help you hit the notes you’re singing properly, whether they’re high or low, loud or soft.

It all comes down to a steady larynx.

singing betterThe What?

The larynx is the middle part of your throat.

Normally when you start to sing higher or louder you will naturally raise your larynx to try and reach those notes/volumes.

Try it now.

In order to sing more smoothly you want to make sure your larynx remains steady.

How To Sing Better

The “Mum” Exercise

This exercise will help your larynx remain steady and also help you get used to keeping your vocal cords gripped together.

Basically what you do is:

  • keep saying “mum” in a steady voice (i.e. “mum-mum-mum” – like a baby making noises while eating)
  • continue until your voice is relaxed and comfortable within your natural tone (don’t try to hit a specific note/pitch yet)

Once you’re comfortable and relaxed then:

  • keep saying “mum” while following a musical scale (i.e. C-Major, etc.) up and down (almost like “Do-Re-Mi” exercises, but with “mum” instead)
  • move on to higher notes/scales, while being sure not to strain your voice.

While you keep saying the “uh” sound in “mum” it will help to keep your larynx steady. This trains your voice to stay steady no matter how high you go.

How Often You Should Practice?

Do this exercise daily for at least a few minutes.

The more you do it the better you will get.

Remember, doing these vocal exercises is something that has to be done constantly. You won’t be a better singer just because you complete the exercise once.

Do this for 2 weeks, every day, and it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll see a noticeable improvement in your singing voice.

Learn How To Sing Better FastThat’s It?

No… of course not. That’s just one particular exercise that focuses on one particular problem when it comes to singing well.

There are a lot of other problems that prevent your voice from shining to its full potential

  • hitting super high notes (falsetto)
  • singing in your “mix voice”
  • dynamic range
  • running out of breath during long phrases
  • getting the right tone/resonance
  • avoiding muscle strain so you can sing longer and more often
  • projecting your voice with the right amount of vocal power
  • much, much more

So what are you supposed to do?

Your Strategy for a Better Singing Voice

The best way to learn how to sing better is to approach it systematically.

You want to look at each area of singing better with a specific, well-laid out strategy for improving it.

How Do You Do That?

  1. Go through the above list to start – pick one area (example – hitting super high notes)
  2. Learn a new vocal exercise that specifically tackles that area (use our blog or something like YouTube)
  3. Practice that voice exercise for a full week (daily practice, at least 15 minutes)
  4. The next week, learn a NEW exercise for that same area (i.e. hitting super high notes)
  5. Practice this exercise for a full week.
  6. Repeat this, focusing on ONE AREA per month.

Total Time Commitment

You should have 4 different vocal exercises that tackle one of the above 8 areas every month.

  • 8+ Months
  • Daily practice (minimum 15-30 minutes of just practice)

Remember repetition is key. You have to keep doing the same exercises over and over to really get the benefit.

It’s exactly like exercising your body – keep it up and you’ll eventually see HUGE improvements.

A Really Great Shortcut to a Better Voice

If you’re anything like me – you weren’t about to wait 8 months in the hopes of becoming a better singer.

You want to sing better NOW. And so did I when I started.

singing betterMy Secret Weapon

The best way to quickly and effectively sing better is to use an online singing lesson.

You could always hire a vocal coach or get private lessons, but in my opinion they:

  • are way too expensive
  • aren’t the REAL pros (most are choir teachers, retired local singers, etc.)
  • don’t meet you often or long enough (half hour sessions, once per week – if that…)
  • don’t care about your success as much as you

Why Online Lessons Work so Well

These courses work well because they are designed to systematically hit every aspect of singing better quickly, efficiently and with the best methods possible.

They were perfect for me because I didn’t want to waste any time. I wanted to learn about pitch, control, harmony, and everything else at the same time…

I didn’t want to wait 8 months. I wanted to sing better in 8 weeks.

And in fact – it happened a heck of a lot sooner than that.

So What to Choose?

Personally, I think the best online singing lessons for beginners and experts alike are Aaron Anastasi’s Superior Singing Method and Singorama.

Get A Better Singing VoiceThe Best Way To Go

If you’re looking for something that has the same sort of bang, but for a much cheaper cost – I’d say go with Superior Singing Method.

There’s nothing wrong with this course, and it actually features some exclusive singing exercises you won’t find elsewhere. A great program for the price.

SingingAn Alternative Option

Another great option if you don’t mind using your computer or laptop to learn is Singorama. It can be the more expensive option of the two, but it’s still worth it.

Why? Because Emily Mander is a great vocal coach and she put a lot into the program. It’s definitely worth checking out, especially since they’re revamping the program altogether.

To learn more about it you can read our full review of the Singorama program.

My Personal Results

When I first started singing I didn’t want to spend a lot of money.

I opted for Superior Singing Method, and wasn’t disappointed at all.

I felt like I started to sing better after the first few days of implementing the exercises. It was fabulous!

My confidence in my ability to sing (loud, soft, high notes, low notes – literally everything) went through the roof by the end of the program.

That Wasn’t All

But I also wanted to try out Singing Success because of the name behind it (i.e. Brett Manning).

So I eventually bit the bullet and went with the easy-payment plan.

Let me tell you – I liked this program! After taking this course, I could truly sing better. But there may be something about the program that’s not the best for you. Read more about this in our full review.

The ONLY Way To Learn How To Sing Better

I continually learn new vocal exercises and constantly try to get better and better at my craft.

That’s just something you have to do to stay on top of your game – especially because singing is so competitive. Everyone’s trying to make it.

More About Improving Your Voice

Although you’ll find a lot of tips on improving your voice for free online (like you will below), there’s absolutely nothing like actually going through some sort of structured singing or vocal training.

You have to be willing to invest in your voice – whether you’re a hobbyist, amateur or a pro –  if you want to really get better at singing. Your vocal chords, mouth, tongue, breath and much more need to be trained to come together in the optimal way to really make an impact with your singing voice. Lucky for you it doesn’t have to be that difficult or expensive to do.

And even if you think you can’t sing AT ALL – formal training in singing will still allow you to at least sing in-tune and on pitch. So never say never!

How To Become A Better Singer

There are a couple of ways you can improve your abilities as a singer. You can either hire a vocal coach and take one-on-one lessons, or you can go through self-study online singing courses.

Personal Vocal Coach

This is by far the most effective and efficient way to become a better singer. Having a personal vocal coach is something that every great singer has. There’s a reason for that.

But it can also be very expensive. If you aren’t willing to pay big bucks you aren’t going to get a lot of face to face time with your coach. If you can afford it however, I’d definitely recommend getting a vocal coach in your local area.

Structured Online Singing Lessons

These professional singing tutorials are the next best thing to actually hiring a private vocal coach and are MUCH MORE affordable. This can be anything from the Superior Singing Method to Brett Manning’s Singing Success. This is something that everyone who wants learn how to sing better can – AND SHOULD – do. In some cases, these products can be just like having a personal vocal coach, without the crazy expense.

Some vocal lessons that you can buy online aren’t the greatest, and you want to be careful that you’re choosing the right one. Because of that, we’ve got you covered. We’ve reviewed the best online singing lessons here. Take a look at the various reviews we’ve got here to decide which singing tutorial is best for you.

If you can’t hire a vocal coach, then doing this (studying an online singing lesson) is an absolute must. It WILL make you a much better singer.

Why Formal Vocal Training = Singing Much Better

Whether you choose a vocal coach or a self-study online course, you will become a MUCH better singer afterwards. The difference really is night and day. Everyone I know that’s been through a few different voice lessons say that they are completely different singers than before going through them.

They’re all now able to control their breath, transition from head voice to chest voice and get almost perfect pitch. And everyone’s self confidence as a singer is at an all time high now.

For me, having gone through a couples lessons, my next hope is to hire a professional vocal coach for personal lessons. But I need to save up some money so I can do it right. If I just waited until I had enough money before starting my training, though, I’d be so much further behind than where I am now.

Seriously, consider either taking vocal lessons online or hiring a vocal coach. You’ll be glad you did.

Tips On Singing Better

But with that being said and having promised you some great info on how to sing better, here are some tips that will help you improve your voice so you can become a much better singer. Of course it should go without saying – practice makes perfect. Even if it means just singing your favorite songs a few times a day.

Maintaining Proper Posture

Every good singer should know about this. Maintaining proper posture is important as this will help support your breathing more efficiently. Standing up straight and maintaining correct posture is the key to breath flowing from your lungs correctly.

Avoid sitting while you sing and make sure that your lower muscles are tight. Keep your shoulders back, but not rigid. You should also try to loosen up your stomach muscles as well. Doing this will improve your ability to control your voice.

Support Your Breathing

Even though it is widely debated how supporting your breathing can be properly done, there is no denying the fact that breath support is very important in improving one’s singing voice. In singing, proper breathing consists of getting the air from your stomach and not your chest.

You should try to practice breathing using your diaphragm while standing correctly (as described above). As you exhale try to work on not feeling any tightness around your body. It will feel a little weird at first, but this will help improve your voice quality over time.

Treat Your Voice With Some Kindness

This isn’t a sexy tip but it’s an important one. You should try to take good care of your voice. Abuse it too much and you may end up damaging it for good. Learn to protect your vocal chords.

When singing, try not to scream in a manner that will actually affect your voice in a bad way. I know if you’re into screamo or metal that isn’t possible, but in that case you’ll have to care for your voice another way.

You should also avoid talking from the back of your throat as this will damage your voice box. Try to speak correctly so that you can keep your voice’s integrity intact. Proper speaking is all about breath support so remember to practice! Some singers have even tried taking up acting classes and speech therapy so that they can help maintain the quality of their singing voices.

Don’t Push Yourself Too Much

This is all about singing and even learning how to sing better. When you learn new techniques and exercises for improving your voice you get excited and want to push yourself to learn and train more.

Avoid this temptation. You have to remember that your voice has its limits and you should try to avoid pushing yourself too far – otherwise you may cause permanent damage. And no one wants that.

That’s It For Now

Those are just a few basic tips on how you can become a better singer and learn how to sing better. Some of it may seem general and broad but its very difficult to get into specifics on the types of exercises in an online blog post. That’s why it’s important to continue your singing training through online vocal training lessons and courses.

With a lot of these vocal lessons and courses you’ll get tons of different warm-ups, exercises and worksheets that provide you with a roadmap on how to improve your voice step-by-step. It’s well worth it if you want to be better and save the time and frustration many people feel when browsing online for info.

I hope these tips on how to sing better help you at least improve your voice a little bit. I’d love to hear any additional singing improvement tips you have in the comments below!

How to Improve Vocal Pitch While Singing

Improve Your Singing PitchA vocalist’s main instrument is his or her singing voice. It needs to be finely tuned so it hits that perfect vocal pitch.

It can take years or training and practice to pull off the perfect pitch, but there are several things you can do to improve you pitch sooner.

What It Takes

Just like all of the other musicians out there, a vocalist must also constantly work hard to improve and maintain their overall ability.

Thus, practice and training remain at the centre of any well-thought-out plan to improve your singing pitch.

Just because a vocalist doesn’t have to pick up an instrument like the guitar or drums doesn’t necessarily mean that he can take it easy.

You need to practice every day in order to improve your singing voice. But more than that you need to be taught how to sing properly and effectively, without straining your voice.

That only comes through professional training.

The Alternative

In all honesty, the alternative is to struggle for years that get wasted searching the internet for free information on how to sing. There’s a lot of good information out there, but it takes so long (years) to piece it all together and make significant improvement.

Even if you are able to find the proper vocal exercises and lessons, it will still take months to make any real difference.

What To Do

Vocal Pitch ImprovementIf you can’t afford a professional vocal coach (I couldn’t afford one back in the day – and I still don’t have one now), then the best thing to do is get a singing course.

They are inexpensive and come with amazing lessons. It’s like having your own private vocal coach in your home, available to you on call.

The best part though, is how they are structured. The way these vocal lessons are structured help you perfect your pitch and tone in a matter of weeks, not months or years.

That’s because they are put together systematically to build upon each lesson.

They are truly invaluable, and the best way to improve your vocal pitch quickly. Check them out because you can try them all risk free. So they’re pretty much, guaranteed to work.

Which vocal coach can say the same? Lol.

Some Tips You Can Implement Today

Here are some tips that you might want to take note of if you are planning on improving your vocal pitch while singing.

Hum the Happy Birthday Song

If you have a tape recorder handy, or any recording device for that matter, then you will want to continuously hum the Happy Birthday Song to yourself and record it.

Yeah, I know it sounds a little weird for you to be doing this, but trust me because this is for your own good.

Once you have recorded the song, play it back and notice how your voice sounds from outside your own head. If you feel like the sound is a little lacking, then you keep working at it until it sounds perfect.

(It’s even better if you have a recording of it professionally sung to compare it to).

That will help you master pitch.

Take Note of Your Voices

After you have recorded the song, play it back and listen to your humming and try to compare your normal speaking tone to your singing voice.

Take note if your normal tone of voice is either too high or too low when compared to your singing voice.

Remember that if the two pitches (singing and speaking) sound similar to one another, then your voice is already at its normal pitch.

How to Lower Your Voice’s Tone

Here are some steps on how you can lower your voice pitch:

  1. Keep your muscles relaxed as tightening them will only cause your tone of voice to become raised.
  2. Try to internally conceptualize the thought that you are projecting your voice from chest instead of your head. If you do this, you should then notice that your voice will start to have a much deeper sounding pitch than normal.
  3. Practice speaking (in private mind you) while placing one of your hands on your chest. Do this so that you will be able to feel your chest vibrate while you are speaking.
  4. Try to work as consciously as you can during conversations so that you can recall your voice’s natural pitch. Practicing while in private will effectively ingrain this sort of vocal tone into your head to the point that it will all become second nature to you.

This will sound cliché, but you should try to practice as often as you can. There is simply no other way to improve your voice except through practicing religiously. Next, read this secret to improving your voice.

3 Ways To Improve Your Voice Instantly

Improve Your Voice InstantlySinging is a talent that you inculcate in yourself over time with a lot of practice and dedication.

You have to put hours and hours into practice and that is the only way you will able to do justice to a song when you sing it. There are millions of bathroom singers but if you want to sing in front of people, you have to follow a few important principles.

These will help you go a long way in your career and even if singing is just your hobby, you will enjoy singing if you follow these tips.

Singing Tip #1

If you have never practiced singing, then it is time for you to include some singing practices in your daily curriculum.

There are some really easy exercise that you can do every day for a couple of hours throughout the day.

Try singing the C Major Scale which goes like “Do Re Mi…” It is definitely one of the best practices you can do initially.

Next practice a few breathing exercises. In fact, you can do the breathing exercises at any time. Do remember to practice both Staccato and Legato notes – they both help train your voice.

Practice singing the notes in increasing or decreasing order of scales or pitch. Then move onto the next one.

Do this every single day for at least a half hour.

Singing Tip #2

Next is practicing your favorite songs and singing to them.

Of course the best way is to, not lip-sync, but actually sing along to your favorite songs with the lyrics in front of you. You don’t need music if you remember the melodies, but you can also get karaoke versions of the songs and sing to the music.

This way you will also get some practice of singing to the music of a song.

Remember the pronunciation of the lyrics of the song is very important in giving character to the song, so practice that as well.

Singing Tip #3

Now, the best way to start singing better instantly is to join a band and practice with real musicians.

Even if they are not professional musicians and the best you can manage is a group of friends who practice in a garage, consider yourself lucky and that is also a very good start.

Practice singing with the band as much as you can. If you sing with people they can also give you valuable advice or criticism which is also very important in understanding where you stand as a singer.

Families and relatives often give you very biased opinions about your singing talents, but your friends will not mince their words, which will help you in the long run. Learn more about how to improve as a singer.
